Over the past 7 years, I have written hundreds of articles about the benefits of drinking water with a focus on alkaline water in particular. It turns out that the benefits that I have spoken about over the years were due to the presence of hydrogen gas (aka molecular hydrogen or H2), and had virtually nothing to do with alkaline water.
The first hint that hydrogen gas might be the source of the benefits was first published in 2007 but went unnoticed by everyone except for scientists. In fact, the first time I heard about hydrogen gas was from Korean engineers in 2010 when I was visiting alkaline water ionizer factories.
As you might imagine, it was quite a shock to me when the American scientist Tyler LeBaron took me under his wing and started teaching me about hydrogen a couple of years ago. Tyler is brilliant and he demonstrated a great deal of patience with me as I baby-stepped my way through the science. The experience of “unlearning” the alkaline water myths was humbling to say the least. I am in debt to and very grateful for the efforts of those who have contributed to my “awakening” and ongoing education.
It always bothered me that the scientific and medical communities never endorsed and in fact scoffed at the claims made by the alkaline water industry. The good news is that there has been a massive amount of legitimate scientific research conducted and published that support the benefits of hydrogen gas and we have only seen the tip of the iceberg.
Hydrogen Infusion Machines (HIM’s): A Better Water Ionizer:
It makes me a little uncomfortable talking about the best of anything. Most of the product ratings that I have seen online are nothing more than self-serving marketing efforts. Whenever I talked about the various brands of alkaline water ionizers, I always maintained that they were all very similar in performance because they were.
The introduction of the new hydrogen machines (HIM’s) makes declaring a “winner” easy because they are massively superior to every brand of alkaline water ionizers when it comes to producing high concentrations of dissolved hydrogen in the water that you drink. In addition, the HIM’s produce H2 at high levels of concentration across a wide spectrum of source water conditions which is the bane of the existence of alkaline water ionizers.
Alkaline water ionizers have always been plagued by soft water (the alkaline machines don’t produce hydrogen without minerals in the source water) and hard water (the high pH produced by the machines causes calcium in the source water to precipitate out of the water causing scaling on the plates which renders the alkaline water ionizers useless in terms of producing dissolved hydrogen).
The HIM’s don’t rely upon minerals in the source water to create hydrogen. The HIM’s have a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) that conducts electricity via a Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE). You are probably thinking: “What the heck does that mean?”. In simple terms, the HIM’s perform electrolysis on one drop of water at a time on the anode side of the water cell and then the protons make their way through the membrane to the anode side where the hydrogen gas is made. Simple huh! Let’s try that again. Instead of having all the water pass by plates in a water cell which is what happens in alkaline water machines, the process in a HIM is much more sophisticated and doesn’t rely upon the source water regardless of whether your water is hard or soft.
Unlike the very basic single electrolysis chamber found in alkaline water ionizers, the HIM’s have three separate compartments within the water cell. The first compartment performs nano-filtration which rejects the calcium and magnesium in the source water and bypasses that water past the 2nd compartment where the electrolysis process happens. Bypassing the calcium and magnesium means the plates in the electrolysis chamber don’t get scaled up and become useless for producing hydrogen. The water that bypasses the electrolysis component, moves directly to the 3rd compartment (HDU) where the hydrogen gas produced by electrolysis in the 2nd compartment gets infused into the water. Easy Peasy right? Well, not really. Let’s try this again. When water passes through a water cell of an alkaline water ionizer, calcium precipitates out of the source water which gums up the system preventing it from producing dissolved hydrogen. With a HIM, that doesn’t happen.
In my opinion, the real magic of the HIM takes place in the 3rd stage (labelled HDU or Hydrogen Diffusion Unit) of the water cell. The HDU dissolves the hydrogen gas produced by electrolysis in the 2nd stage. Alkaline water ionizers can produce lots of hydrogen gas by electrolysis, but they don’t have a mechanism to dissolve the hydrogen gas into the water. The HIM’s actually create hydrogen in the water which is the whole point of the exercise.
It is difficult to quantify exactly how much better HIM units are than alkaline water ionizers because HIM’s diffuse H2 (which is responsible for all of the health benefits) into the drinking water while alkaline water ionizers create lots of H2 but lose most if not all of the H2 into the air before you ever get a chance to consume the H2. Suffice it to say that the HIM’s are in a totally different class than alkaline water ionizers when it comes to producing H2…..which is the entire point of owning a water machine.
The leading brand (Enagic) of alkaline water ionizers offers a range of water ionizers but their two most popular units cost $4,000 and $5,000. Most of the competing brands of alkaline water ionizers sell in the $2,500 to $3,000 range.
The HIM’s were initially priced at the $2,500 level to compete with the alkaline machines. However, after a short period of time, the HIM’s seemed to find a price level of $2,000.
My personal favorite HIM units are the HIM2 and HIM3 sold by Brilliantz. A couple of years ago, I was invited to join a group of the top H2 people in the USA to test and improve a new prototype of an ionizer that reintroduced the H2 created at the cathode during electrolysis back into the water. The group were a “who’s who” of the H2 industry and I felt that I didn’t have the credentials to be part of the group but I was thrilled to be able to participate. ere not up to par with the rest of the group, but I’m was grateful to be part of it. The group made 4 significant changes to the prototypes to make them more reliable and efficient, and I have been a fan ever since.
