What does that mean? To me, it means that the object that I’m considering purchasing offers more benefit to me than the effort I have to put out in order to be able to afford to purchase it.

Junk Food: Does a piece of chocolate provide enough pleasure to merit the ten or twenty cents that it costs. Unfortunately for me and to many others, the answer to that one is yes despite the fact that we know that it is bad for us. Our society is filled with overweight people because junk food is a low cost way of providing temporary satisfaction. Unfortunately, in the long run, the cumulative effects to our health of over consumption of junk food exceeds the financial cost. The real cost the health risk.

GMO Food: This is a tougher decision. Monsanto/the Devil is feeding the world. Productivity is up which keeps prices down. However, what is the real cost?

Entertainment: This is a far reaching category…from music to sports to theater to movies to television to the internet and so on. Other than professional sports and some theatrical productions, entertainment is typically very inexpensive from a financial perspective. To me, the real cost is the “brain dead” time that so many of us waste in front of the television, or the loss of “family time” as we all scurry off to our offices or bedrooms to play on the “net” instead of sharing with each other.

Water: You didn’t think I would let this one sneak by did you? Most of us think water is free because it doesn’t cost anything to get a drink of water out of our taps. Once again, the cost shouldn’t be measured in terms of money. While tap water is “free”, it is often filled with poisons that cause long term health problems.

The Reverse Osmosis people (a good one can be purchased for $400 to $600) have had it right all along in that they have focused on eliminating harmful contaminants from water. Adding a Calcium/Magnesium type supplement to replace lost minerals and eating an alkaline diet to offset the acidic properties of RO water is a good solution, or, you can add an antioxidant filter ($300).

I can’t leave this topic without talking about electric water ionizers. They work…plain and simple. But, how much should you pay for it? I guess that depends upon what value you attach to your health. The Kangen guys are the only “real” electric water ionizer company as they sell 5,000 machines per month in the USA. It boggles the mind to see people paying $4,000 per machine when competitive brands that work just as well or better sell for half the money….but that’s marketing baby! The market share for the alternative brands is shrinking while the Kangen brand is growing. It looks like the only real alternatives for consumers are the antioxidant filters which sell in the $300 to $400 range. I understand that sales for the antioxidant filters are taking off, but I thought their impact would have been greater by this time. Apparently the low price of the units is holding back sales as people wonder if the product actually works. Go figure.

On a percentage basis, virtually nobody owns a water ionizer. Would you use one if it was free? Would you pay $100? $200? $500? $1,000? Does the brand make a difference to you? I would really like to know so please comment below.

I don’t know any other way to describe the success of bottled water other than to recognise that the bottles are for lazy people. There is simply no reasonable explanation for people to be wasting ridiculous amounts of money and knowingly destroying our planet with bottled water other than they are too lazy to do something about it. This may sound crazy, but I think the real problem with bottled water is recycling. People think that bottled water is ok because the bottles get recycled. Wrong….less than half of the bottles get recycled.

Electro Magnetic Fields/Radiation: My new passion. Most of us know that we should avoid living near overhead telephone wires if we can avoid it. We have been hearing from out parents since we were children to not sit too close to the tv or the computer (but for the wrong reasons). We know that using micro wave ovens kills off the useful nutrients in the foods we “nuke”. Yet so many of us ignore the evidence.

We like our cell phones, our portable phones, our computers, and our televisions. Many of us broadcast WiFi through our homes and offices. The convenience offered represents great value when it comes to dollars spent versus the pleasures or efficiency derived from them. Virtually none of us has ever considered the cost of what the radiation from these appliances does to our health until the WHO announced in March 2011 that it ranks cell phone use as a Type 2B carcinogen. What does that mean? It means that using an unprotected cell phone may cause cancer. What does it cost to protect yourself or your children from this? Twenty bucks for lab tested shields that offer a 97% a reduction of the EMR’s entering your ear canal. Seems like a no-brainer to me. I have also learned that shields can also reduce the EMR from your computer screen by 89%, but you need four of them. My solution to reducing EMR’s from computer screens is to keep the screens a full arm’s length away (about 3 feet from my face as my hands rest on the keypad). I find that resting my arms on the desk also reduces the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.

I could go on and on about the value of things because the selection of items to choose from is endless. The old adage that the best things in life are free still holds true. For everything else, there is…..do your homework and please consider all the costs, not just the price tag.

I believe it is important to respect the opinions of others.

Today I make an exception as I have to ask myself what the heck is going on with the decision making processes in Europe these days. Greece put Europe on alert, but the real elephant in the room is Italy of course….but I digress.

A couple of weeks ago, a group out of Belgium published the results of a ten year 300,000 person study which claimed there was no correlation between cell phone use and brain cancer. The results were quickly pummeled by the leading experts in the industry from all over the world due to inappropriate testing and analysis. Making ridiculous claims has a way of drawing ridicule.

Today, a reader sent me a link of an article with the headline: “EU bans claim that water can prevent dehydration”. The subtitle of the article reads: “Brussels bureaucrats were ridiculed yesterday after banning drink manufacturers from claiming that water can prevent dehydration”. You can link to the article here:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/eu/8897662/EU-bans-claim-that-water-can-prevent-dehydration.html which is a Belgium study

As a result of the new Euro ruling, producers of bottled water are now forbidden by law from making the claim and will face a two-year jail sentence if they defy the edict, which comes into force in the UK next month.

Have all Euros taken loss of their senses, or is it just the politicos? I thought our politicians were the leaders in making stupid decisions regarding water. The GOP has spent a good part of 2011 attempting to rip the guts out of the EPA and the Safe Drinking Water Act, which is in place to protect everyone.

I don’t mean any offense to the many European readers of this blog, but geez…suddenly, we don’t feel so stupid over here. Perhaps somebody should give the good folks in Brussels some waffles or truffles and a nice glass of wine to calm their nerves.

The $860,000 that Congress spends on bottled water each year amounts to $2,000 per representative.

House Speaker John Boehner received more than 65,000 messages asking for a cut to wasteful spending. The message campaign was spearheaded by Corporate Accountability International, Change.org and Food and Water Watch.

While it is nice to see that wasteful spending is being cut, Washington has a lot more work to do. The US deficit has grown by over 4.5 trillion dollars in the last three years, so $860,000 is a drop in the bucket. I can imagine that the government will find equally foolish ways to spend the bottled water savings.

The real message should be that government is taking the lead in being responsible to the environment. The amount of water and resources and fuel consumed to get a bottle of water to your door is enormously wasteful by every measure. Why not save the costs of making the bottles, shipping the bottles, and then disposing of the bottles by simply putting in filters for taps, or provide a filtration system for the entire House? That would probably be too easy. My guess is that somebody figures out how to make money on it.

Governments should be leading by example. They should be taking soda machines out of schools and all government buildings and replace them with filtered water from drinking fountains or “tap water refilling stations”. The city of San Francisco has started to install the refilling stations around the city so that people can fill up their reusable drinking bottles. Check out the story at:
According to the PUC, the city’s tap water costs $.003 per gallon versus $1-$4 per gallon of bottled water. And it’s much better for the environment since it doesn’t come in plastic bottles.

Read more: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/cityinsider/detail?entry_id=81158#ixzz1DOkyuoH1

I don’t know how the unit in the picture in the story can cost $37,000, but I’m sure that the cost would decrease to a much more reasonable level once volumes pick up and competition to build the units grows. I believe the key statement in the story was: According to the PUC (Public Utilities Commission), the city’s tap water costs $.003 per gallon versus $1-$4 per gallon of bottled water. And it’s much better for the environment since it doesn’t come in plastic bottles

Stop buying bottled water and make your own. It will likely be much cleaner water, it won’t pollute the environment, and… drum roll… save you lots of money. If you need to take bottled water with you to work or to put on your bedside table at night, get a proper filtration system and make use of a reusable bottle.

You can read the article at: http://www.sify.com/news/coca-cola-embroiled-in-dangerously-misleading-water-ad-controversy-news-international-lcfluhaajdj.html

The advertising campaign for Coca Cola’s bottled mineral water has been criticized by the National Consumers League (NCL) an American consumer group, which they have labeled “dangerously misleading”. The consumer group complaint is that the advertisements are “a public health menace” and “outlandish”.

The Coca Cola ad campaign claims that the bottled water can replace flu shots and prevent illness. Coca Cola claims the water is nutritious based upon the fact it contains 100% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. What the advertisement doesn’t tell us is that the water also contains up to 5 teaspoons of sugar! Anyone that has done any research at all would never consider a beverage to be healthy if it contains up to 5 teaspoons of sugar. The Advertising Standards Authority obviously agrees, as they banned the advertisement.

The ad campaign includes a poster containing the words “flu shots are so last year” and “more vitamin c, more immunity”. According to Sally Greenburg, the executive director of the NCL: “These advertising claims are not only untrue, they constitute a public health menace.” Stopping these Vitaminwater claims, which contradict information by the Centers for Disease Control and other public health authorities, should be a top FTC priority,”

Soft drinks are a leading cause of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. In addition, they contribute heavily to acidosis in the body. The pH level of the original Coke is 2.5, which is 50,000 times more acidic than pure water. Acidosis is believed by many researchers to be a major contributor to many if not all disease.

Your body expires about 2.5 quarts (liters) of water per day that the fluids that to be replaced. Most people consume obtain about a pint (half liter) of water from the food that they eat, which means the average person needs to drink 2 quarts (liters) per day.

The only fluid your body requires is water….clean healthy water. You can create virtually an unlimited amount of clean water for your family by purchasing one of many different types of pre-filter system that costs about $250. The annual maintenance cost of replacement filters for the system costs about $100 per year. If you can afford to add an extra $150, you can purchase an antioxidant filter that will provide your family with the healthy benefits of ionized water that is loaded with powerful antioxidants. Any other liquid requires your body to work to eliminate the unnatural chemicals and burn off unwanted calories, and most liquids available for sale are acidic.

As always, the opinions expressed in this article are those of the author

I heard about the new movie “Tapped” in the summer time, but I never got around to checking it out. When I came across the movie trailer recently, it instantly grabbed my attention. It is a powerful documentary that should be watched by anyone who drinks bottled water. You can watch the “trailer” for the movie at the end of this article.

There are 29 billion plastic drinking water bottles made in America each year. When I think about how few of those bottles make in to recycling plants, it makes me sick to my stomach. But the landfill problem is only the beginning. When you take into consideration the amount of petrochemicals consumed in making the bottles and transporting the water, the environmental toll is staggering. Finally, when you learn that most of the bottled water we drink is filtered tap water, you just have to shake your head because of all the resources and money wasted on products that we don’t need.

According to an advertisement on one of the website of one water ionizer company, the average American family spends $400 per year on bottled water. Bottled water generally tastes better than most tap water, but if you left your tap water exposed to air for a few minutes, it would taste much like your bottled water because the chloring gas would have a chance to escape into the air.

Bottled water is not better for you than tap water. In fact, bottled water is an unregulated industry while municipalities must adhere to the Clean Water Act in the USA and in Canada. While the Clean Water Acts in both countries are obsolete, and inadequate, they do set basic guidelines that place it far ahead of the bottled water industry.

If you can afford a filter system, you should purchase one and hook it up to the tap in your kitchen, or wherever you get your drinking water. Don’t listen to what your governments is telling you about the safety of the water that they are supplying to you. Your municipality is obligated to remove about 60 contaminants from your drinking water. Unfortunately, there are about 60,000 known contaminants in the source waters in our countries. Instead of wasting $400 per year on tap water that you buy in bottles, why not consider investing in a proper filter.

Solutions:

You can buy a basic water filter such as a Brita for about $20, which is really inexpensive. Brita wins on the replacement filters that should be changed every few weeks and the annual cost of replacement filters is about $100. The primary function of the Brita filter is to remove the taste and odor from chlorine.

What Brita and other filter companies don’t want you to know is that the taste and odor from chlorine will evaporate out of your tap water if you leave the water in a pitcher on the counter or in your refrigerator for a few minutes. The nasty taste and odor cause by the chlorine that is introduced into your water supply by your municipality to kill bacteria and maker your water “safe”, can’t evaporate when it is in the water mains and pipes that feed your house, but as soon as your water is exposed to air, nature will take care of the problem. Try it yourself and you will see.

You can also install a basic under counter or even above counter charcoal water filter canister filter for about $70 from your local hardware supply store. The annual cost or replacing a single canister charcoal filter should not be more than $20 per year.

I think every household should have a minimum of a 3 canister under sink (or above counter for those who rent and are not allowed to drill a hole in their counter top) pre-filter system. The systems can be customized to be effective in removing specific contaminants such as fluoride and chloramines and other substances found in your source water. The systems can be purchased for about $250 including the filters. The annual replacement cost of the filters should be about $120. Many websites advertise more expensive filter systems, but for most situations, they are unnecessary.

The new Antioxidant Filter systems at a cost of $400 provide better filtration than the three canister pre-filter systems. The annual replacement cost of the filters is about $100. However, the really cool thing about the Antioxidant Filters is that they are much more than a filter system, because they also deliver the same health benefits of as good water ionizers that cost $1,500 to $4,000. That means that you are effectively paying an additional $150 for an effective producer of alkaline ionized water. It seems to me that the decision to buy one of these systems is a ” no brainer” if you care about the quality of the water that you drink and your health.

If you can spare five minutes, the “Tapped” movie trailer below is worth watching:

An advocacy group called Corporate Accountability International estimates that 17 million barrels of oil were required last year to make the water bottles that were produced for drinking water in the United States.

Let’s put those 17 million barrels of oil in perspective by comparing it to the ”environmental disaster” that is taking place in the Gulf of Mexico. While the estimates of the size of the spill seem to be increased every week, it is now assumed that about 1 to 2 million barrels have leaked into the Gulf.

While some may say that the environmental catastrophe of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is much worse than the problems created by bottled water, I would disagree. The creation of water bottles uses up the same amount of oil every three weeks, year after year after year. That’s right, every three weeks. While much of the oil problem will float to the surface and evaporate or be skimmed off the water and beaches in the next few months, the plastic bottles will remain for approximately 450 years. People that are effected by the spill are really angry with BP, and for good reason. However, those same people continue to create far worse damage to their environment every day and nobody seems to care.

Here is another way of looking at it. It takes about the same amount of oil to make the bottles for disposable bottled in the USA as it would to operate 100,000 automobiles from American roads. People are paying hundred of millions of dollars to drink water that is inferior to the water that they can drink from their taps, and they are consuming huge amounts of oil to produce the bottles. Hmmm.

Now that you know the environmental cost of making the disposable bottles for drinking water, let’s take a look at the environmental cost of disposing of the bottles. We ignore the problem of disposing plastic water bottles because they are recylable….right?. How bad could it really be if we recycle? Pretty bad. Most of don’t realize that 10 billion plastic water bottles end up in our landfill sites each year (don’t forget to take the caps off the bottles before carrying them to the end of your driveway in your recycle boxes, or the bottles won’t get recycled). That means about 30 plastic water bottles end up in our landfills each year for every man, woman, and child.

Still not bothered by this? Try this for a visual. If you lined up the empty bottles created each year in the USA that end up in our landfill sites, they would stretch from New York to Los Angeles approximately 200 times. Need another example? How about 5,000 olympic sized swimming pools filled with plastic water bottles, or a pile that would cover Manhattan Island….every year….and they last for 450 years…each

Stop drinking bottled water. It is very harmful to our environment.

It is generally accepted that people should drink about half a gallon (64 ounces) or 2 litres of water per day. If you drink bottled water, you will be surprised how much the cost of the water adds up to in a year. If you drink bottled water purchased while “on the go” from vending machines or stores, you will typically pay between 5 to 8 cents per ounce. That equates to $3 to $5 per person per day, or $1,000 to $1,500 per year.

Very few people drink bottled water purchased exclusively from small bottles. If you drink exclusively from 18 litre jugs, the annual cost of drinking water for a person is about $300. That sounds like alot, but if a single person drinks the 2 litres per day(the recommended amount), then they need an 18 litre jug of water every9 days, which sounds reasonable. A jug of water costs about $7.50 when it is delivered (at home or work), so the math is correct. If you use bottled water for cooking, the cost jumps again.

People who drink from coolers at home and work oftern supplement their water consumption with small bottles that are purchased “to go” because they are not always around a cooler. In that case, they typically spend $500 per year. For drinking water! For a couple, that means $1,000 per yearn, and the figure could jump up tp $2,000 for a family of four. Unbelievable! When I wrote this, I had to go back and check my math as the figure seemed to be too high to be possible. If you see situation described above, you might want to consider thinking about alternatives that provide you with superior water and allow you to take a nice vacation every year.

Most families who drink bottled water don’t spend $2,000 per year because they simply don’t drink enough water. They can also cut costs by filling small reusable containers.

If you do fill up reusable containers, the options typically include: glass, plastic, or stainless steel. Glass is always the best as they don’t leach anything into the water. Glass bottles are much more sturdy than most people think and they are able to absorb a significant impact without breaking. For example, the glass bottles that we use can fall off our kitchen counter and land on a tile floor without breaking. Don’t ask!

If you participate in vigorous activities and are concerned about your bottled water container breaking, you can choose stainless steel or plastic, with stainless steel being the choice of preference. If you happen to be one of the lucky/smart people who have access to ionized water, don’t use a stainless steel container as the container will deionize the water.

If you have made the smart choice to drink water because it is the ideal liquid for your body, don’t feel bad about whatever you are spending. The alternatives to water cost a lot more money, and force your body to work much harder to get rid of the extra calories or contaminants that your body doesn’t need.

Before I leave the subject of the cost of bottled water, please consider that we pay about 2 cents per ounce for gasoline versus 1 to 8 cents for bottled water. Think about that for a minute! Procuring bottled water is virtually free while it cost millions to explore and drill for oil. Then the oil has to be transported to refineries that cost about $4 billion to build to be refined into gas. Then the gas has to be shipped to storage areas and then shipped to gas stations that are expensive to build. Then you must consider the labour costs involved in all of the processes. Now you get to the really expensive part, which is government taxes on the gas. All of these costs are included in gasoline that you purchase for about 2 cents per ounce. Think about that the next time you purchase a 20 ounce bottle of Dasani or Aquafina for $1.75 out of a vending machine.

When you consider the phenomenal profits margins available on water sales, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that bottled water companies spend tens of millions of dollars convincing the public that “pure” bottled water is good for you. It should also come as no surprise that our natural water sources are being bought up and privatized. If you think water is expensive now, wait to see what water costs in the future.

But what about the awful taste and the contaminants such as chlorine, chloramines, and fluoride that is in our municipal drinking water?

Governments mandate that municipal drinking water is safe. What does that mean? It really means that the water that comes out of your tap won’t kill you right away. Municipalities take the bacteria out of the water which chlorine or chloramines, and they do a good job of it for the most part. However, there are always exceptions.

In order to remove the bad taste of chlorine or chloramines, a simple and inexpensive charcoal filter that can be installed under your kitchen sink will do a great job. You should be able to purchase a good filter and canister housing for under $100.

If you want a more sophisticated filter system, a three canister system will most likely remove virtually all the bad stuff while allowing the healthy minerals to remain. A three canister system, including the filters typically cost about $250. The filters should last about a year, and the replacement filters should cost about $100

The bottom line is that you can provide clean, safe, good tasting water for your family for about $100 per year if pre-filter your tap water. Talk about a “no-brainer”

Stop drinking bottled water. If not for your health or the environment, do it for the $500 you will save each year.

More than half of Americans drink bottled water, and more than one third of Americans drink bottled water on a regular basis. Is that a good thing? Yes and no. Drinking water is definitely better than drinking a soda, but you are probably not drinking the “pure” and healthy water that you think you are.

There are three significant reasons not to drink bottled water which include: health issues, the high cost of bottled water, and the environmental cost of bottled water. Covering all three issues in one article would make this a very long story. Therefore, I have broken down the article into three Parts. This Part deals with the health issues of drinking bottled water.

Health issues of bottled water:

CTV news reported this week about a recent study in Montreal, Canada, that is “raising worries about bacteria in bottled water, noting they’ve found “revolting” levels that could put certain vulnerable people at risk.” Researchers from a laboratory in Montreal started to randomly test bottled water for bacteria when one of their employees complained about the taste of the water from a bottle and then became ill. They tested several brands and found more than 70 percent of the samples contained bacteria levels that were dozens of times higher than the levels permitted by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). That doesn’t mean that all bottled water, or even the bottles that they studied were unsafe. In fact, the researches indicated that the level of contaminants found in the bottled water that they studied would most likely only cause adverse effects in those that are more susceptible to illness.

While the potential of the bottled water to cause illness is certainly important, I believe the real significance of the research is that it dispels the public image that bottled water is “pure” and healthy. The “pure” and healthy perception held by the public has been created over many years by sophisticated marketing campaigns that have cost hundreds of millions of dollars. That’s right, hundred of millions of dollars. Bottled water is that profitable.

You can read the article at: http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20100525/bottled-water-bacteria-100525/20100525/?hub=TorontoNewHome

It has been estimated that nearly half of bottled water is simply tap water that has been filtered. That may provide some comfort, especially if the filtration eliminates the foul taste and odour of chlorine and other chemicals in your tap water. However, you can purchase a simple charcoal filter that can be installed under your kitchen sink that will do the same thing or more likely a lot better for a fraction of the cost.

Having learned the importance of eating an alkaline diet and drinking alkaline water, I’m always interested in the acidic content of foods and drinks. The ideal pH level of the fluids in our body is between 7.3 and 7.4 which is slightly alkaline. When you drink liquids that are acidic, you eventually become more acidic, and that is the playground for disease. Canadian municipalities, by law, must provide drinking water that has a pH that ranges between 6.5 which is acidic, and 8.0, which is alkaline (7.0 is neutral). The water supplied by most municipalities typically has a pH level slightly above 7.0 because it results in lower long term maintenance costs. Therefore, most municipalities are doing our bodies a favour.

Now, let’s take a look at the pH levels of the leading bottled water products. Dasani (the Coca Cola bottled water product) has a pH of 6.6, which is acidic, and barely above the legal pH level of drinking water in Canada. Since pH measures are logarithmic, that means that Dasani is 5 to 10 times more acidic than the drinking water supplied by most municipalities in Canada. If you think Dasani is bad, take a look at Aquafina (Pepsi’s bottled water product). Acquafina has a pH level of 5.8 which means that it is 7 times more acidic than the lowest legal pH value for water supplied by municipalities. In fact, Aquafina is 40 to 90 times more acidic that the water supplied by most municipalities. Think about that the next time you reach for a bottle of water.

One last little tidbit of info to make you think twice about drinking bottled water. The introduction of BPA-free bottles has helped improve the quality of bottled water, but there is evidence that chemicals still leach out of our plastic bottles. You can read about this in the following CBC report: http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/08/21/f-bpa-free-bottles823.html#ixzz0pPnp5HL4).

While bottled water is much better for you and your children than colas or other sodas, the water is still not as good for you as tap water. If you really care about your water, filter your own tap water, or better still, filter your water and buy a water ionizer.

Stop drinking bottled water. It is less healthy that tap water, it’s expensive, and it is terrible for our environment.
